ABSTRACT

In her last editorial, Chief Editor addressed the theme of knowledge contamination in medical field (1). In this important article she highlights the importance of cooperation of different subjects in order to face the huge challenges of medical sciences, that became even more complex due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. For these reasons, it would be useful to move on from a multidisciplinary to an interdisciplinary approach, to finally achieve transdisciplinarity, as stated by Jean Piaget over fifty years ago (2). Applying these concepts to medical sciences has already been done, mostly in “borderline” disciplines such as Hygiene and Public Health, Forensic Medicine, Psychiatry and so on (3). The effort in this direction is fundamental and undelayable, and it will not be successful if it will not be supported by a strong educational activity in both undergraduate and post graduate medical education. A deep revision of current health professionals training, especially physicians, is crucial at both academic and continuing medical education (4, 5). In such a peculiar historical and epidemiological moment, an innovative and broader concept of the Italian National Health Service (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale - SSN) might be proposed and turned into operational services made up by different professionals that would work together to respond to population’s health needs. The reorganization of SSN ought not to forget to assess a strong educational program to obtain transdisciplinary knowledge skills and competencies. © 2021, Medicina Historica. All Rights Reserved.
